Minister Fajon: Major powers must serve the world and its peoples, not impose their dominion

SLOVENIA, February 14 - "Slovenia continues its mission for peace, solidarity and respect for international law and the UN Charter. At a time when global security is becoming increasingly precarious, we act as a sincere mediator between the major powers. We are here to remind them that their duty is to serve the world and its peoples, not subject them to their dominion," Minister Fajon emphasised.

The Munich Security Conference is taking place against the backdrop of discussions on ending the war in Ukraine, with calls for the EU to take on a greater leadership role in ensuring security across the continent. In her speeches and discussions, Minister Fajon underscored the importance of European unity in addressing security challenges, while also stressing the need for dialogue with all actors in the international community. "When we hold differing views, dialogue becomes even more important, especially with the United States, our strategic partner. Slovenia remains open to cooperation with everyone," Minister Fajon underlined.

“The issue of increasing defence spending will undoubtedly have to be seriously addressed in Slovenia. The world is changing rapidly, and we need to adapt. However, security is not only a matter of military expenditure; it is also about maintaining a strong welfare state," she added in the context of today's discussions.

"In today’s complex geopolitical environment, the balance between the power of rules and the rule of power is becoming increasingly important. We must not allow the power of rules to be eroded," said Minister Fajon during a panel discussion on the first day of the Conference, which focused on the power of small states. The panel featured the President of Estonia, Alar Karis, the Prime Minister of Fiji, Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport of Liechtenstein, Dominique Hasler.

On the sidelines of the Conference, Minister Fajon also held bilateral meetings with several ministers and representatives of various organisations. Their discussions focused on global conflicts and the severe humanitarian crises, exploring potential solutions which, although difficult to implement, remain essential.
